For as little as this price is... it does a lot. It will consistently throw our orange Safety Soft Lite Balls around 40 MPH from a distance that we measured at 34 feet from the batter. The balls have a lot of squish to them, which is great on the safety side, especially for the youngest players. The lack of a variable speed control is one of the reasons it is so inexpensive and why I recommend that if you are not beyond your budget, you might want to have a look at some of the other Heater Pitching Machines.
For not much more, look at our Slider Lite Ball Pitching Machine, which can also throw these soft lite orange balls or a harder, higher velocity yellow lite dimple ball (also around 2+ ounces); half the weight of a regulation baseball. Adding another $30 and you can purchase a similar machine with variable speed. This might keep your young player interested in hitting on it beyond their youth league days.
