It has always been said that baseball is a game of inches, and it is these inches around the plate that are so important to a pitcher. The Ultimate Pitcher's and Catcher's Plate "will make kids understand how to pitch to batters so they can be successful," says Baltimore Orioles scout Chip Muse. "It allows them to see where the ball needs to be thrown to get batters out."
The Plate is a simple tool to use and emphasizes what the best coaches in the world are teaching their pitchers and catchers: working the outside and inside corners. The Plate is ideal for all ages. It's something that can be used as high as the Major Leagues, yet a dad can throw it down in the backyard.
The Plate weighs just 1.6 pounds, which makes it portable, and it's made of the same material found in motorcycle helmets, making it durable enough to stay in place indoors or outdoors. As a result, many youth leagues are permanently installing the Ultimate Plate in bullpens, where the plate's added UV protection ensures itself of a long life outdoors.
Learn the importance of pitch location and take back home plate from aluminum bat hitters.
The Plate's orange edges are 5" wide on the top and 7" wide on the bottom front to serve as a visual target for the pitcher to see. The 5" orange edges and white part of the Plate cover the last 2½" of a traditional home plate and 2½" off of the plate (the outer limits of the strike zone).
Since a baseball is 2¼" any part of the ball that touches the edge of the 17" wide plate is considered a strike. This Plate will effectively teach pitchers the 22" wide target - the entire strike zone - rather than just the 17" width of home plate.
The back part of the plate is to help position the catcher. The catcher is to center his body on the point of the white part of the plate to give the pitcher the ultimate target to throw to on either corner of the plate. This teaches catchers how to set up in the proper location.
The Plate can also be used for hitting drills, as batters can work on inside and outside pitches.
An excellent teaching tool. It is portable, and convenient to use. It has multiple uses, from the bullpen to the intra squad game and all kinds of drills in between. I recommend the Ultimate Pitcher's and Catcher's Plate.
Bob Bennett - Fresno State University, Head Coach from 1970-2002
I am a very visual person and I believe that most of the young men we coach are also. Now we have a product that allows the pitcher and the catcher to visualize where we have always talked about them throwing the baseball.
Brady Wiederhold - LSU, Pitching Coach
What an amazing idea! We stress the importance of staying out of the middle and this product allows our pitchers to focus on the outer thirds. The Pitcher's Plate enables our pitchers to have a visual aid in our development of commanding the zone.
Chris Murphy - United States Naval Academy, Pitching Coach
The Pitcher's Plates are a must for developing pitchers. We use them everyday in our bullpen sessions. The Plates give the pitchers an exact spot to focus on and the catchers an exact area where to set up. These plates are portable, great for...when we travel.
Jamey Shouppe - Florida State University, Pitching Coach
I think someone finally has done something for the pitcher and catcher in their development.
Greg Frady - German National Team, Head Coach
We used to lay towels down on either side of the plate, or draw lines. Every coach has concocted their own system. This way is more visual, and it just backs up what every coach is trying to teach.
Danny Pralgo - East Cobb Baseball, 2000 Coach of the Year
A great visual tool for the pitcher, who can easily see the ideal locations to throw to, helping them better understand where they should be throwing the ball.
The catcher is to center his body with the point of the white part of the plate on either corner to give the ideal target for the pitcher to throw to. Setting up on the corners creates great habits for the catcher.
Use for hitting drills, such as two strike hitting by expanding the zone, along with working on inside and outside pitches. It gives the hitter a better understanding of what the pitcher is trying to do.
We have instructors offering individual hitting instruction in California, Florida, Georgia, Texas, New Jersey, and most of the 50 States.
