| Do You Dream About Playing Pro Ball?
The statistics and odds are unbelievable
A 2nd round draft choice has a 24% chance of ever making a Major League Roster…and how many of those guys ever make an entire career as a Big Leaguer...you guessed it, not many.
And you dare to dream this dream...you? But let me assure you of this, talent might get you close... but you will only get their with the work that it takes to be great at anything and that’s IF you have a little luck on your side as well. Some of the best players I have ever seen on a baseball diamond never got past the lowest rungs of pro ball... so there must be more to the story, don’t you think?
But on the other side of the coin... why not you! The dream starts to become reality in the mind and the younger you decide this, the better the odds (not the guarantee... it just gives you more time to be dedicated to learning what it takes). The decision that you will work your hardest and do your best is where it all begins and continues through even the darkest days Everyday, you are either getting better or you are getting worse…and that’s the truth without exception, and both are your decision. Then it becomes a matter of dedication to learning and improving, nutrition & growth, injuries, perhaps some good luck and holding on to the dream.
And Just In Case No matter your present age, your future is never guaranteed and who knows what other interests & opportunities are just around the corner so I HIGHLY recommend that you:
Remember, not all MLB players became pros out of High School. Many players develop their baseball minds and really grow their bodies during those college years so open your future to all of your possibilities! And try to see yourself from what your coach’s point of view…After all, why would you expect any coach or teacher to help a player who is not a good person…right? So, be coachable, be a good team mate, cheer for and support every other player in your dugout when things go right and learn from and learn to understand when others fail. Remember, no player wants to make an error. These guys just worked to make themselves into ballplayers even though they weren’t the blue chip athletes who could throw a ball through a wall or hit towering homeruns. These might be average sized guys who worked on their weak-points and took their areas of talent and improved them so that they became what pro scouts might call “serviceable ballplayers”…guys who may not stick out in a crowd but do many things well enough that when you add it all up, you want them on your team.
How do you get there? Your best shot is to outwork your competition. *I can guarantee you only one thing... you have a 100% chance of not scoring, if you don’t shoot! *Taken from Wayne Gretsky, perhaps the greatest hockey player of all time. He was that rare combination of great talent plus a great worker in practice and off the ice. And finally, make it a priority and never forget all who have their taken time and given their interest in helping you to become a better ballplayer and person!
And Always:
