Building quickness in a ballplayer is huge! Swinging wood (not just in wood bat tournaments and leagues) is a true test of that quickness... so better players will learn to hit with wood and do it as often as possible. The results are certain to show in the short run and over time.
The Big Butt Wood Bat is a Baseball Tips exclusive designed by Coach John Peter. It's a slightly head-heavy maple bat with a -2 oz. weight drop that feels even lighter because of an auto choke feature.
The thin handle flares out to an oversized knob (hence the name "Big Butt") that forces players to choke up when swinging the bat. This unique counter-weighted flared knob gives players added control and gives the bat a balanced feel.

Once again, I am recommending a product that does not ask players to put in extra time (some just won't).
Instead, practice and train as you normally will, but use a tool that gives better/quicker results and immediate feedback... all just by investing that level of time and effort you normally would anyway.
Then with luck, the player getting the better results invests more time in themselves and their game as they see themselves getting better. It's just human nature to do more of what we are good at!
The Big Butt Bat Series is made of our hard maple pro wood and combines some unique qualities that I have created for today's competitive youth player, though I would not hesitate putting this innovative model in the hands of certain pro players.
Here's the skinny...
Purchase this model in the same length as your aluminum game bat!
Players are quicker when swinging aluminum bats, and as we all know... quickness helps drive players to higher levels!
Instead of reducing the overall length of your bat (because after all, wood bats do feel "heavier" than aluminum) this new model "forces" the hands into a choked up position... about 1-2 inches from the butt end, creating a lever-effect.
The player now has almost 2 ounces of bat "below" his hands so he is actually swinging a 2 ounce "lighter" bat using that extra weight as a counter-balance. This translates into quicker bat-head speed without reducing the size and weight of the business end.
The Results
Players get added quickness (less weight & a counter balance lever) and more control (shorter bat) while retaining the weight, bulk and strength of the bat head itself.
All while training with wood. the amazing secret of the best amateur players anywhere!
You can now finally swing a -2 ounce weight drop that feels like the -3 ounce models but has the added benefit of more weight, which equals more POP!
Big Butt Bat or Bare Butt Bat?
The Big Butt Bat is our traditional two-tone double dipped finish (2 coats of stain) that happens to be my personal favorite color combo.and Mr. Bonds' too for that matter (he also seems to favor a large knob - medium barrel bat like this model).
The Bare Butt Bat is bare wood with no stain, paint or color to fill the grain of the wood. It has a smooth natural finish and is best for those players who want to tape their own bat handle or add extra pine tar (or other stickum) to the handle or more easily store extra stickum up the barrel. Remember, it is illegal to store any foreign substance more than 18" above the handle. so we placed our bat ring so you will automatically know without measuring.
